How to Start Teaching Online Art Classes (without the complicated set-up or expensive tech)

If you are considering earning extra income teaching online art classes to kids, lean in…

The set-up and tech gear is so much easier than you think.

Back in 2010, there were few tech options available to me that I could afford but with a few set-up hacks, an inexpensive DSLR and leads of duck tape, I managed to film and edit a few dozen videos.

I think it’s worth sharing how my filming process evolved throughout the years, so you can get a sense of just how effortless it can be to start an online class business today.

Here’s a snapshot of what our video production journey looked like for Deep Space Sparkle:

Sounds complicated right? It was. It was also expensive.

But if you are just starting out, you don’t have to do any of the above.

In fact, with less than $100 plus the device you likely have in your back pocket, you can start your own side hustle teaching online art classes.

Teaching online art classes is really as simple as placing your iPhone on a tripod, taping a sheet of paper on a wall, hooking up a mic and standing in a well lit room and starting teaching.

Types of Online Classes You Can Offer

The simplest way to get started is to teach a live class using Zoom.

The only real requirement is that you have a good camera on your desktop or laptop. It also helps to have an overhead camera so that your artists can see both your face (necessary for engagement) and the art lesson from above.

I love this method of getting started because there is really no editing required. Just press record, teach the class and save the recording to post later should you want.

PRO member, Michele Debuisne from the Paris Palette loves using the live Zoom class structure to teach her students each week.

If you are familiar with teaching art lessons then this live class format is an easy next step.

But what if teaching lives classes doesn’t work for your schedule?

Recording lessons in advance is your best option.

While this approach requites additional effort, it allows for greater control and customization.

Record your art lesson and then edit the video to incorporate a cover, music (if desired), and any instructional text that enhances the viewer’s experience.

Don’t be discouraged by the extra steps involved. Once you find a rhythm, such as recording three lessons at once and then editing them together, you’ll be working efficiently.

Primerry PRO member Georgie Dohery, is a busy mom of 3 and finds it easier to record and edit her art lessons for her art membership in chunks so that she can manage her childcare.

Now that you know how easy it can be to start teaching art online, you now want to think about designing your teaching space.

Designing your set is one of the most enjoyable aspects of filming videos. Creating simple backgrounds is a big part of curating this experience.

I have used simple bulletin board paper covers, fabric backgrounds that have been painted, foam core that has been covered with papers and even simple bookcases decorated with book and art supplies.

My goal is to immerse anyone who watches my videos in art and inspire them to feel creative in their space.

You see… teaching online is easier than you thought!
