MOSAIC HEARTS ART LESSON
Sometimes an art project is inspired by the strangest of things. In this case, a sparkly roll of craft tape. A soon as I saw these shimmering beauties at Michael’s Craft store, I just knew I had to incorporate the glitter tape into an art lesson and of course, it being winter time and close to Valentine’s Day, well, let’s just say it didn’t take long to figure out a plan.
This lesson plan ended up being less about the glitter tape and more about math. Mosaics in particular. It’s a familiar art form for kids and the physical act of piecing shapes together to form a beautiful pattern is filled with learning opportunities.
Created for my third grade class, this lesson is easily adaptable for older kids by making the heart shape larger and requiring more complex patterns, but it can be simplified as well.
For younger kids, the simple act of cutting strips into squares is a worthy enough skill on its own, but using little fingers to glue small pieces of paper onto a shape is a bonus.

Great project just in time for Valentine’s Day. I love the idea of including the mosaic history, etc.
im going to try this with my class
I love mosaics and have often included Roman and Greek mosaic floors in our art history sessions.
A beautiful book illustrated with mosaics is Saint Valentine by Robert Sabuda. I keep thinking I will use this some day but it is really too wordy to read. All of the illustrations are mosaics though and well worth showing to a class. Perhaps your lesson will help me jump in there and just do it!
Thank you for the book title!
I did t see the tutorial on glitter paper. Can you please share?
Hi Tabitha,
Th glitter paper tute is included in the full lesson plan.
I’m a student teacher and would love to access this lesson, but there are no members being added until August! Is there any way to access this resource before then?
